Tasmania (TAS), or the ‘Apple Isle' as its affectionately known, is Australia’s smallest state in land area(68,401km2), as well as it’s least populous state (515,000 people). Tasmania was the founding place of the world’s first ever environmental party. Tasmania is the largest island of an array of 334 smaller islands in the South-Eastern corner of Australia.

The state is named after Dutch explorer Mr Abel Tasman, who was the first person to discover the island in 1642. Tasman named the island Van Diemen’s Land after his sponsor Anthony Van Diemen, the Governor of the West Indies. It was later changed in honour of Tasman in 1856.
