Profile of Sydney

Sydney is the state capital of New South Wales and the most populous city in Australia and Oceania. Located on Australia's east coast, the metropolis surrounds the world's largest natural harbour, and sprawls towards the Blue Mountains to the west. Residents of Sydney are known as "Sydneysiders". Sydney is the second official seat and second official residence of the Governor-General of Australia and the Prime Minister of Australia. The Sydney area has been inhabited by indigenous Australians since the Upper Paleolithic period. The first British settlers arrived in 1788 to found Sydney as a penal colony, the first European settlement in Australia. Since convict transportation ended in the mid-19th century, the city has transformed from a colonial outpost into a major global cultural and economic centre. There are more than 250 different languages spoken in Sydney and about one-third of residents speak a language other than English at home. The average price for a House is AUD 794,829, and the average rental for a House is AUD 2,386. Out of 4391674 residents, 2162221 (49%) are male, 2229453 (51%) are female, and the average age is 36. There is a range of facilities in the area, including 1368 schools, 173 hospitals, 1542 childcare centres, and 175 shopping centres.

Sydney

Sydney, the exciting, sunny and handsome city, is a splitting image of the lucky people who live there. Sydney is spread across the famous harbour, which also spans the panorama that adorns every Sydney postcard and iconic photo you have ever seen of Sydney that has nestled within its midst the highlights of the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge (nicknamed the ‘coat hanger’). The laid back city is actually not as hectic as many other large cities, it is actually quite natural and green. Bondi Beach’s surf beaches, bushwalking in the Northern suburbs, or cruising around the first settler’s original site of arrival, Botany Bay, Circular Quay and Darling Harbour are all within a hop, skip and jump from the city centre. Its pretty clear that once you have tasted Sydney’s lifestyle it is a very hard act to follow.

Its always a good idea, to go for a stroll to Circular Quay to walk along the harbor-side to see first hand how exceptional and what a marvel the Opera House really is, and with the Harbour Bridge as a backdrop, this is where you will take plenty of those photos (which will never be as overwhelming as the experience first hand!). One of the popular tourist attractions at the moment is to climb the bridge to get a marvelous view of the harbour, the city both the North and South side of the bridge, and all those dazzling homes owned by some of Sydney’s wealthiest people. The Botanical Gardens is not far away, with its oasis-like appeal and flourishing beauty right in the middle of Sydney City. The Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Sydney theatre are close by, and there is always fun events planned for the parks and open spaces all over the city. Sydney is a sun-drenched haven, and it is literally girt by some of the world’s best beaches, in fact over 70 of them. Bondi Beach Surf Club, is actually the world’s very first Surf Life Saving Club, and the surf clubs right along Australia’s coasts competitively compete for the Ironman title throughout Summer.

Sydney also has a reputation for its shopping districts, such as in The Rocks’ and it’s neighboring galleries, choc-full of special and unique gifts, interesting fashions, and all sorts of hand-made bits and bobs. Famous labels can be bought at Queen Victoria Building, and there are hundreds of funky little markets held all over the city, with second hand, home-made, imported and collaborative styles on offer. Paddington, Surrey Hills and Oxford Street are meccas of this type of things plus a lot more!

If you are looking for multicultural food, Sydney is the place to be. Depending on the suburb, you are able to get the most authentic food —whether yum-cha in Chinatown, delicious paella in the city’s Spanish Quarter, green or red curries in Thai-na Town, the best Vietnamese food in Cabramatta, Lebanese food in Bankstown or unbelievable Korean barbeque in the Korean zone off Pitt Street. Bring Your Own (BYO alcohol) restaurants and not too excessive prices make eating out in Sydney not too much of a bank-breaker — but some of Sydney top-notch spots can put a dent in your budget, such as some of the Japanese, French, Italian and modern fusion-Australian restaurants.

It does not matter what you plan to do while you are in Sydney, you will not see everything or do everything that you planned to. That's why whenever anyone visits Sydney, you will be sure to return again in the future. No wonder Sydney has been voted the World’s best city several times, and is in the top ten whenever it misses the title.
