Queensland (QLD) or the ‘Sunshine State’ as it is effctionaly known, is in the North-East of Australia, is a huge state with an area of approximately 1,800,000 km² the second largest state of Australia (after Western Australia). Queensland was first inhabited by Aboriginal Australians and Torres Strait Islanders many thousands of years ago. The first European discoverers to land in modern day Queensland (and Australia) was the Dutch navigator Willem Janszoon in 1606, who then explored the West Coast of the Cape York Peninsula which is not far from the present location of a town called Weipa.

Of the 4.5 million people living in Queensland, 2 million of them live in the capital city of Brisbane (jokingly referred to as ‘Brisvegas’), other major Queensland cities are the North Queensland cities of Townsville, Cairns and Mount Isa, and the Southern famous beach and tourism cities of the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast.

Queensland has continually developed thanks to its abundant natural resources and the mining industry as one of the main drivers of the Australian economic growth. Tourism is equally as valuable to the Sunshine State, because of that nickname, the sun shones all year round which attracts domestic and internatinoal tourists to its beautiful beaches, themeparks, and island getaways.

With the Great Barrier Reef being one of the most famous UNESCO World Heritage sites located in Australia, it not only contributes significantly to Queensland’s tourism industry, but for the whole of the East Coast of Australia’s tourism industry directly and indirectly.

Queensland’s temperatures can range from mild in winter (Jun – Aug) to scorching hot in the summer months (Dec – Feb). An annual temperature range generally pretty warm all the way up to 49 degrees Celsius. It very rarely gets cold, especially under zero degrees. Based on the seasons, various sports and activities are available to participate or to spectate. Cricket and surfing/surf lifesaving are really popular sports in Summer and Rugby League, Rugby Union and Aussie Rules are all popular in Queensland as winter sports. Fishing and camping are all really popular pastimes all year round (more so in Summer though).

Queensland offers a tropical getaway for tourists, without having to leave Australian shores and the safety and security that comes with it. The beaches, the food, the lovely sunshine and laid-back style of the locals make Queensland an ideal location to visit or to settle down for that hard-earned sea-change.
