New South Wales (NSW), or the 'First State' as its affectionately known, although not the biggest Australian state in land area, it is Australia's most populous state (7.5 million people) and home to Australia's most famous city, Sydney. New South Wales has a special place in Australian history because it's coastline was the first to be discovered and named by Captain James Cook in 1770, and in 1788 Sydney was the very first colony to be established by the British in Australia.
